Ohio author, Mindy McGinnis, will discuss her novel "A Madness So Discreet" and the treatment of brain injuries and mental illness in the 1890s.
Author Mindy McGinnis shares the research behind her Edgar Award-Winning Gothic historical thriller, "A Madness So Discreet." McGinnis will discuss how doctors treated brain injuries in the 1890s and the different aspects of care for the mentally ill (for better or for worse) including the infamous psychosurgery known as a lobotomy. McGinnis will also delve into a brief history of the Athens [Ohio] Lunatic Asylum, the setting for the novel.

Mindy will talk about the inspiration and research for her latest book, Under this Red Rock, a murder mystery set in the cavern systems of Ohio that explores themes of mental illness, examining the often misunderstood behavior patterns of those who struggle. She will also discuss the importance of speaking out about mental health and share some of her own experiences with depression and anxiety as well as how they informed her process while working on this book. There will be time for Q&A, so bring any questions you have. Mindy will also have copies of her books available to sign and sell (cash, credit, and app accepted). This new book club is for adults who love reading and want to connect with other adults who do too! This will be an open book club, meaning no assigned books to read! Simply read what you like and share with others so we all get exposed to new books, writing styles and genres! We will meet the second Wednesday of each month at the library. Light snacks will be provided.
As of now, no registration is necessary. Just show up with a book you are currently reading or recently finished and enjoy the comradery of other book lovers!
